Nice article, thank you. Although there are some aspects of Material that I like ( the subtle animations, etc ) , I seldom choose it as my design language for web applications. I find that the UI elements are too abstracted, which weakens the discover-ability for users not already comfortable with Material interfaces.

I will be adopting for my own use, some of your own arguments against Material. Thanks for that too!
